Act of War- Direct Action (DVD) - Software Publisher's Description:
Act of War: Direct Action (DVD) review:3 stars (graphics are nice. game controls & storyline kinda sucked) - The graphics were amazing. By zooming in an arc to the ground level, the details are better than Command & Conquer Generals. On the other hand, the game controls are just not good: they're very confusing. I wanted to force the units to destroy some buildings to have more buildable space, but they don't have this option. The classic RTS controls system is still the best (Command & Conquer Generals, Star Wars Battlegrounds, etc). The storyline is so bad. It seems it was made by one of those "before noon bad movies directors". Command & Conquer Generals still has a way better and more realistic storyline. You'd laugh when you see the major's gun pointing on Zhakarov's head. HIS GUN.At least, it's coming out in this new wave of games that come out on DVD-ROM which gives you a big satisfaction over the "4-5 CDs" sets that sometimes you get an error on the 2nd or 3rd CD while installing. Some stupid publishers still sell their games on multiple CDs sets only.At the end, Command & Conquer Generals is still in overall better than Act of War: Direct Action.3 stars (Much potential for this game yet there is something missing) - There has been a long comparison between this game and the game C&C Generals. However, I find some aspects in the westwood rts line that made it great not in this game. One aspect that disturbs me is that you can skip through missions. That turns off all of the fun right there. The campaign is sloppely put together and is much too fast. The C&C games had it where it was mission by mission like its supposed to be. This game has a very innovative graphics engine and POW portion of the game which has never been thought of in a modern RTS. One problem is that anti-tank soldiers are overpowered. There is no true unit besides a sniper that can take out groups of kornet missles or javelins. This doesnt apply to heavy snipers since they reload slowly. First of all the javelin missle soldier doesnt require munition feeding personnel and moves just as fast as small arms commandos. who have a 5 times smaller weight to haul around. This game has great units and features but the overpowering of the AT soldier makes some of the great tanks just be bait for kornet missles and javelins. This game has its bright spots but in the end its a slight dissapointment.3 stars (Good game, but not that great. Beware of system spec) - This game has good graphics, great cut scenes and the terrain and units are very well detailed, But it is not as great as some people are saying.
What i don't find good in this game is the movement of the units, they move very choppy, not as smooth as in Generals. The objects are too sharp and colors are bright. The game sometimes gets too loaded and movement slow down to a very unconfortable way, specially in latest mission which involve lot of units. My system is a athlon xp 3200+, 1 GB PC3200 memory, Sata drive and a 128MB FX5900XT GPU. All other games run very well and smooth in my system, but not this one.
I don't find the great deal about the explosion, and the burning buildings may look nice, but when it comes to blocking your sight, you will wish all that smoke to go away.
There are many units to command, so many that some won't never be used, and there are no hero Units with special abilities.
Air Units are another dissapoinment, you only can set a target for them and they will just fly accross the map to their target, and most of the time you will only see them on the minimap, so there in no tactics on it.
The game is very easy to learn, specially if you played others RTS games, and it's too easy win. For me this is another build lot of tanks and rush game, or worse, build lot of artillery units and win it more easely from far, specially the multi-task tank of TFT, which allow you to build lot to suicide drones and send them to the enemy base from anywhere in the map.
If this game were made on a engine like the one used in generals, it would had been much better and fun. i think they put to much effort in detailing the terrain instead of making this game fun to play.
